From the always great Zach Lowe over at Grantland today.

A package of Ellis and Doron Lamb works and gets Memphis under the tax. The Bucks could put seldom-used Tobias Harris in Lamb’s spot, giving Memphis a promising small forward and opening up the wing a bit more for Gay.

The most important part of the article with regard to the Bucks though was that he didn't think it was likely. So take it as you will.

I like the idea, but definitely trade a forward over Lamb. Trading half of the guards on the roster only leaves Jennings and Udrih, which is dangerously thin. But getting any kind of longer-ish term production for Ellis is a plus for me.

I like the trade a lot. If we can trade Ellis and Lamb for Gay I would be happy. I think if that trade is completed, we would immediately have to make another trade for some guards: JJ Redicks name has been thrown around? We have enough assets/ big man where I think we can get a serviceable two guard and maybe another guard with that for depth. So our line up would be: Jennings, Mystery serviceable 2, Rudy Gay, Mbah Moute, and Sanders.. Henson getting more playing time. This would be more of a move to the future. Lets face it this line up we have now is so inconsistent. I would be excited for a move for a B or better star!

He's still owed a LOT of money on his contract over the next couple of years.  Bucks would think long & hard about that trade.

Aside from being 4,5 inches taller is there really that much of a difference between Monta and Rudy?

Gay is a better 3-point shooter, though he's been down a bit the last two years. His shooting percentage is lower this season, but I think his athletic tools make him a bit more alluring. Obviously size.

But I think you make a relevant point, it isn't the slam dunk obvious upgrade it seems it would be. I think the hope is that Gay could still get a little bit better, whereas people feel like Ellis is what he is at this point. Of course, there's only one year of age difference between the two and Gay has actually played more minutes in the league than Monta.

I don't think gay is a big enough upgrade and he would be owed 17.8 and 19.3 million the next two years...yikes

This is pretty much what Lowe proposed in the article but with the Celtics added for the Bucks to get a replacement SG.

If that is seriously a possibility that would be dumb for us to not go after even with the money situation. our problem that is talked about non stop is our undersized back court, rudy gay and ellis play extremely similar in my opinion except gays height makes a huge difference and makes things much easier for him there fore more consistent

if you want to compete for a championship with the teams in the nba now it seems as if you have to have an all star at small forward, rudy gay is one of those guys. hes a scorer with height

Problem wit Rudy's contract tho is that he's gettin paid 19 million dollars the same year that Larry Sanders theoretical contract extension would begin and Larry is going to need to be paid at the very least 10 million dollars per year to stay a Milwaukee Buck probably even a little more as he's somewhere between Javale Mcgee (10 million per year) and Serge Ibaka (12.3 million per year) talent wise. Ersan is already owed about 8 million dollars so between Ilyasova, Gay, and Sanders the Bucks would be committing 38 million dollars to those 3 at the start of the 2014-2015 season.

And as for the short term swapping Gay for Monta/Harris would just mean that Daniels shifts to the starting 2 instead of the starting 3. I think at first glance this is a good deal but if you dissect it the deal doesn't seem to favor the Bucks all that much. Id prefer for them to just ride out this "Jellis" thing for 50 more games and have some potential cap flexibility and a clean slate next offseason..I dont see Rudy Gay ascending to All-NBA type level and while he was the undisputed go to guy on the Grizzlies his teams never finished above 30 wins.

your probably right but im sure there wont be any big moves made in the off season to actually make us contenders and everything will just go back on jennings forcing him to do everything again

Bad move, It would be better to let Ellis walk at the end of the season. Gay isn't worth his contract and we don't need to get saddled with it. We need to have free-cap space and search judiciously for a player who can lead our team, even if it means some meager years until that happens.

This, absolutely this. And furthermore, if Milwaukee even slightly entertains the notion of this trade, we HAVE to have another trade lined up immediately that would us another couple shooting guards. We're already thin at the guard position: getting rid of Ellis and Lamb will screw us even further in that regard.
